The new Layton Utah Temple stands on nearly 12 acres of land in a peaceful area of southeastern Layton, along Oak Hills Drive. The temple is visible for miles around, especially when it’s illuminated at night. Unfortunately the temple has not yet been dedicated, and the Latter-day Saints in the area eagerly await the dedication announcement. The new temple was announced clear back in April 2018 – one of seven temples to be built. Interestingly, the Richmond Virginia Temple was announced at the same time, and it was dedicated earlier this year. Even their groundbreakings took place only a month apart. So it’s estimated that the Layton Temple will be dedicated in the spring or summer of 2024. No promises though!

As mentioned above, the new temple was originally announced five and a half years ago by President Nelson, on April 1, 2018, during General Conference. Two years went by before the groundbreaking took place, on May 23 2020. The groundbreaking ceremony was originally scheduled for May 30th. But due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the ceremony was held on a very small scale one week early without advance public notice.

At around 87,000 square feet, it is among the largest in the entire world (although there are still quite a few that are larger, like the nearby Ogden Temple at 112,232 square feet, and the Salt Lake Temple, at 403,000 square feet). The property on which it now resides was acquired by the Church on Friday, March 30, 2018 — just two days before the temple was announced! What a blessing to be able to announce the temple at that time!

The public open house and dedication dates have not yet been announced, but we will post them here once they are. We know many people in Davis and Weber counties are very excited for this temple, as well as the Syracuse Temple, which is also under construction at this time!

Once it is dedicated, the Layton Temple will be one of 27 temples in Utah that are in operation, under construction, or announced.
