The Oakland California Temple was closed in February 2018 for extensive renovations that lasted about a year. The 50- year-old temple was updated throughout the interior, with new furnishings and finishes, and brought up to code. The designers of the renovation stayed true to the original vision conceived for the temple by architect Harold W. Burton, upgrading the historic mid-century structure to a mid-century modern masterpiece. The windowless temple had windows added for the first time to the main floor waiting area.

Once the renovations were complete, it was rededicated on June 16, 2019, under the direction of President Dallin H. Oaks, first counselor in the First Presidency.

The temple is a highly recognized East Bay landmark, with a sweeping view of the San Francisco Bay Area. Its unique, magnificent rooftop gardens and extensive grounds are distinguished by a cascading waterfall and creek-style water feature running from fountain to fountain in front of the temple entrance—lined with colorful gardens and towering palm trees.
