(Feature photo can be found here: Sacramento Temple – Sunrise Glow by Rory Wallwork)
The Sacramento California Temple is located off Highway 50 in Rancho Cordova, 20 miles east of Sacramento. The site was once owned by Aerojet General Corp. for use as a recreational center, but 47 acres of their land was acquired by The Church. The beautiful piece of property is on a hill overlooking the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The majestic oak trees surrounding the site create a serene and peaceful setting for the temple and all those who attend.
For many years before the Sacramento Temple was built, northern Californians had to make the drive to the Oakland Temple. So naturally everyone was thrilled to hear the announcement that a temple would be built in their state capital of Sacramento. But it still took more than five years to finalize everything with the city and to complete the construction of the temple.
Before we share these beautiful temple pictures with you, here are a few facts about the Sacramento Temple that you may not know:
- It was the 123rd temple in the world and the seventh built in California.
- It was dedicated on September 3, 2006 by Gordon B. Hinckley.
- The Sacramento Temple was announced the same day as the Redlands Temple and the Newport Beach Temple.
- Its original design was for an temple of approximately 50,000-square-foot, which is much larger than the current 19,500 square feet. But the plans were modified to follow an adaptation of the design used for the Redlands and Newport Beach temples.
