The McAllen Texas Temple stands in a busy but peaceful area of the city of McAllen in the Rio Grande Valley near the southern tip of Texas. The 27,897-square-foot temple has a single centered steeple, common in the design of many modern temples. A new adjacent meetinghouse and distribution center, as well as mission offices, were also built to meet the needs of Latter-day Saints and the mission in the area. It is the 5th temple in the state of Texas, with another three either announced or under construction.

The design of the temple was inspired by citrus crops grown in and around McAllen, as well as Spanish colonial architecture found in the area. Many of the patterns feature citrus blossoms, barbed quatrefoils, scrolls and ribbons. Blue colors used in the design are reminiscent of bluebonnets, which are the state flower of Texas, and the nearby Gulf of Mexico. Shrubs and dozens of palm trees adorn the wonderful temple grounds.

Inside the temple, general areas use soft-gold broadloom carpet. Some rooms feature an area rug with blues, golds and greens. Doors are made of mahogany, with bronze handles that have an antique bronze finish.

The McAllen  Temple was one of eight new temples announced four years ago by President Nelson during the October 2019 General Conference. The groundbreaking took place just over a year later, in November 2020. It was dedicated earlier this month, on October 8, 2023, by Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. If you didn’t have a chance to tour the temple during the public open house, be sure to take a look at the pictures of the beautiful interior of the temple here.
