Temple News: Layton Temple Groundbreaking, Pocatello Temple Updates, and More

This sure is a busy time for temples right now! Normally we don’t have nearly this much news to report, but so many temples are being built or soon to be built, and surely the amount of wonderful things happening will only continue to increase as the summer goes on. Today we’ve got news about the Layton Temple, Pocatello Temple, Bentonville Temple, and the Vernal Temple. Details below!

A very small-scale groundbreaking was held for the Layton Utah Temple.

Early Groundbreaking for Layton Temple

Despite being scheduled for May 30th, the groundbreaking for the Layton Temple took place on Saturday the 23rd instead! It was a very cold morning, but one that was hopefully warmed up a bit by the excitement that the construction of the temple will be starting. It was a very small gathering due to COVID-19 restrictions, but still a very important one.

As you can see from the picture above, not many people were invited to attend. Irene Caso, spokesperson for The Church, said “Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the need to limit public gatherings, leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints determined a traditional groundbreaking for the Layton Utah Temple, with invited guests, was not prudent.” But that’s ok because now the work can begin!

A video of the entire groundbreaking event has also been made available as of May 30th. You can view the video below:

Pocatello Temple Updates

As you’ll see in the pictures above, so much progress is being made on the Pocatello Idaho Temple! It’s truly amazing how fast the work is moving forward. Lately hundreds of crates are filling the staging areas around the temple as deliveries of materials continue to arrive at the construction site. Granite has been installed on most of the main level, including all of the north and east sides and much of the south and west. On the second and third floors, interior framing is well underway, ducts are being installed for the HVAC system, and window frames are going in.

Even though a lot of progress is being made, the work won’t be complete until the latter half of 2021. But it’s going to be a beautiful temple! Above images courtesy of churchofjesuschristtemples.org

The site plan that was submitted to the city for approval. The temple will be built next to the current stake center.

Bentonville Temple Site Plan

A conditional use permit for the construction of the Bentonville Arkansas Temple was approved (with a 7-0 vote) on May 20, 2020 by members of the City of Bentonville Planning Commission. The plan that was submitted to the city is depicted above. The temple will be built at 1101 McCollum Drive near I-49 and will serve members living in or near the region of Northwest Arkansas including parts of Missouri, Oklahoma, and Kansas. This may seem like a somewhat small step in the process, but every approval means it’s one step closer to beginning construction!

The parking lot expansion project is making great progress around the Vernal Temple.

Vernal Temple Parking Lot Expansion

Many of you may not even be aware that this project is ongoing, but the parking lot around the Vernal Utah Temple is being expanded. More curbing and sidewalks have been poured, electrical wiring has been run, and bases installed for the lamp posts that will light the parking area. Outlines have also been drawn for the various landscaping features, including a circular gathering area at the center of the parking lot median. These will be some beautiful and useful changes to the area around the temple! Above image courtesy of churchofjesuschristtemples.org
