About the Albuquerque New Mexico Temple
Announced on April 2, 2000 and dedicated on March 5, 2000 by President Gordon B. Hinckley, the Albuquerque Temple is the 77th operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the first built in New Mexico. The temple sits on a 10-acre site in the residential neighborhood of North Albuquerque Acres, with the exterior featuring one of the most distinctive symbolic programs of any temple in the Church — moons, stars, and suns carved in their ascending astronomical order from earth to heaven. The Celestial Room art glass features a prominent sun on the east side, where morning light floods the sacred space throughout the day. Missionary work in New Mexico began among the Zuni Indians along the Little Colorado River in the 1860s, giving the state's Latter-day Saint history over 130 years of roots by the time of the dedication.
The path to City of Albuquerque approval for the temple was marked by a memorable act of youth faith: when problems arose with the city approval process, area youth members fasted and prayed for resolution. Approval was granted. Then the youth fasted and prayed again — this time for the construction workers. At the groundbreaking, more than 6,500 members crowded the 10-acre site to participate, with Elder Lynn A. Mickelsen of the Seventy presiding and commending those who had traveled long distances. "It is during these special moments that we can feel and see the hand of the Lord moving in the work," he said. During the ten-day public open house, thousands of visitors toured the temple, and the dedication marked a milestone for members throughout New Mexico who had long traveled to the Mesa Arizona Temple or the Dallas Texas Temple for their temple worship. The temple serves 10 stakes throughout the Rio Grande Valley.
