The first and currently only temple in Alaska and the 54th in the world, originally dedicated in 1999, it is currently being rebuilt as a larger replacement structure on the same site while the original building continues to operate. About the Anchorage Alaska Temple
Announced on August 19, 1996 and dedicated on January 17, 1999 by President Gordon B. Hinckley, the original Anchorage Alaska Temple is the 54th operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the first and currently only temple ever built in Alaska. Before its dedication, Alaskan members faced drives or flights of at least 1,000 miles to reach the nearest temples in Seattle or Cardston, Alberta. The original 11,930-square-foot building was originally intended to be the prototype for the Church's new "smaller temple" design conceived by President Hinckley — but the Monticello Utah Temple was ultimately chosen for that role because of its proximity to Church headquarters. The Anchorage Temple's 700-pound Celestial Room chandelier is one of its most beloved features.
On January 23, 2023, the First Presidency announced that the Anchorage Temple would be completely reconstructed as a new, larger building on the same property — the first time in Church history a temple was reconstructed while the original building continued to operate on site. The existing temple remains open throughout construction at the southeast corner of the property, while the new 30,000-square-foot replacement is rising where the former meetinghouse stood. Construction began in early 2024 and is expected to be completed in 2027, at which point the original temple will be decommissioned and a new meetinghouse built in its place. The new building features two instruction rooms seating 40 patrons each and a significantly expanded capacity for the 9 stakes it serves throughout Alaska.
