Birmingham Alabama Temple Pictures
Set on a tree-covered hillside in the Birmingham suburb of Gardendale, just east of I-65, the Birmingham Temple was the first temple built in Alabama. Announced by President Gordon B. Hinckley on September 11, 1998, it was dedicated on September 3, 2000 as the Church’s 98th operating temple, serving Latter-day Saints throughout Alabama and the Florida Panhandle. Its classic single-spire design, finished in Imperial Danby marble from Vermont, rises above handsomely landscaped grounds so admired that the City of Gardendale gave the temple a beautification award in 2008. About the Birmingham Alabama Temple
The Birmingham Temple was among five smaller temples announced by the First Presidency within a single month in the fall of 1998, part of President Gordon B. Hinckley's initiative to build more, smaller temples closer to Church members around the world. Finding a suitable site proved challenging: the first location considered had unstable soil unfit for construction, and a second option ran into its own obstacles, before Church leaders finally settled on property the Church already owned in Gardendale, originally purchased for a meetinghouse. The extra land turned out to be the perfect size for one of the Church's new smaller temple designs. Elder Stephen A. West presided over the groundbreaking on October 9, 1999, where hundreds of members arrived early and sat patiently through the rain, undeterred by the weather.
Remarkably, only eleven months passed between the groundbreaking and the dedication. The finished 10,700-square-foot temple, clad in Imperial Danby white marble quarried in Vermont, follows the same classic modern, single-spire design used in several other temples built during this era. A public open house held August 19 through 26, 2000, drew 21,134 visitors. The day before the dedication, Elder David B. Haight of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles celebrated his 94th birthday in Birmingham, and the day after, he and his wife marked their 70th wedding anniversary. President Hinckley dedicated the Birmingham Temple in four sessions on September 3, 2000, with local stake president Richard D. May later remarking on how many members had renewed their commitment to family history and temple attendance in the year leading up to the dedication.
