About the Bismarck North Dakota Temple

Announced on March 17, 1999 and dedicated on September 19, 1999 by President Gordon B. Hinckley, the Bismarck Temple is the 58th operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the first ever built in the Dakotas — serving both North Dakota and South Dakota from its central location in the state capital. The dedication marked President Hinckley's first and only visit to North Dakota, the last of the 50 United States he had never visited. Before the temple opened, the distances members traveled to the nearest temple were remarkable: members in Grand Forks drove 16 hours to the Chicago Illinois Temple; those in Minot made a 14-hour trip to the Cardston Alberta Canada Temple; and Saints in Rapid City, South Dakota, traveled 7 hours to the Denver Colorado Temple. The temple's first president, Robert B. Dahlgren, noted that despite these extraordinary distances, members were highly dedicated and accustomed to sacrifice — including a retired couple who willingly relocated to Bismarck simply to work full-time in the temple.

In his dedicatory prayer, President Hinckley honored the scattered but faithful membership of the district: "They have felt much alone. They are out on the frontier of the Church. Their numbers are still not large. But they are entitled to every blessing which the Church has to offer, including the blessings of Thy holy house." The temple serves 3 stakes throughout North Dakota, with members across the Dakotas, western Minnesota, and northern Nebraska drawing on its blessings. A Fargo North Dakota Temple has since been announced to serve the growing eastern end of the state, reflecting the steady growth of the Church across the Northern Plains.
