About the Boise Idaho Temple
Announced concurrent with the Dallas Texas Temple and the Chicago Illinois Temple — all three sharing a sister floor plan — and dedicated on May 25, 1984 by President Gordon B. Hinckley, the Boise Temple is the 29th operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the second built in Idaho, following the Idaho Falls Temple. The 85,600-square-foot temple sits adjacent to the I-84 Cole Road exit, with six soaring spires rising in the distinctive silhouette shared by its Dallas and Chicago siblings. Notably, it was the first six-spire temple built since the Washington D.C. Temple and the Salt Lake Temple. The design proved so efficient that it was adapted for 14 other temples built between 1984 and 1989. A touching piece of Church history precedes the Boise Temple by decades: in 1939, President Heber J. Grant was invited to the capital city by 15 prominent local businessmen who offered the Church any available site in Boise for a temple. President Grant promised that when Church membership grew sufficiently in the area, a temple would be built there — a promise fulfilled 45 years later.
The open house drew far more visitors than expected — approximately 70,000 attended, and during a special VIP preview, the group included Idaho Governor John Evans, Lieutenant Governor David Leroy, Secretary of State Pete Cenarusa, and 246 ministers of other faiths and their families. The temple closed for a 15-month renovation in 2011 and was rededicated December 16, 2012 by President Thomas S. Monson, with the renovated exterior, updated interior, and refreshed landscaping revealed to over 40,000 new open house visitors. The Boise Temple serves 16 stakes throughout the southeastern Treasure Valley, with a third Treasure Valley temple — the Caldwell Idaho Temple — announced in April 2025 and now in early planning stages.
