Rising in Calgary, the Calgary Temple was the third temple built in the province and the eighth in Canada. Announced by President Thomas S. Monson on October 4, 2008 — the first Canadian temple he announced as Church president — it was dedicated on October 28, 2012, an especially meaningful return for President Monson, who had served as president of the Canadian Mission in Toronto beginning in 1959 and called the country “about like going home.” Its gray granite exterior, quarried in China, and gilded angel Moroni rise above the city that serves Latter-day Saints from Banff to Drumheller. Our collection of Calgary Alberta Temple pictures, art prints, and paintings captures this Canadian Rockies-adjacent landmark.
Latter-day Saints first settled in southern Alberta in the 1880s, working as contract laborers on the St. Mary's Irrigation Canal and establishing farms in what is now Cardston. By 1895, the first stake had been organized in the province, and membership grew steadily over the following century until Calgary itself was ready for its own temple. President Thomas S. Monson announced the Calgary Temple on October 4, 2008, and Elder Donald L. Hallstrom of the Presidency of the Seventy presided over the groundbreaking on May 15, 2010, before an audience of about 1,600 members, civic leaders, and government officials. Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, whose own residence stood just a couple of miles from the temple site, sent a personal letter describing the future temple as "an inspiring landmark and a fitting tribute to the Mormon community's long and proud history in the province and in Canada."
The finished three-story, 33,000-square-foot temple rises 115 feet, its gray granite exterior imported from China and its spire crowned with a gilded, three-meter statue of the angel Moroni. More than 100,000 visitors toured the temple during its public open house, held September 29 through October 20, 2012, and a cultural celebration the evening before the dedication featured music, dance, and a theatrical reenactment of the 1910 emigration of the John H. Sheppard family from England to Calgary. President Thomas S. Monson dedicated the Calgary Temple in three sessions on October 28, 2012, as the Church's 140th operating temple, telling the Church News beforehand that returning to Canada, where he had served as mission president decades earlier, felt "about like going home." The temple serves members throughout the greater Calgary area, from Banff in the west to Drumheller in the east.
Set against the backdrop of the Canadian Rockies to the west, the Calgary Temple's gray granite exterior and towering spire offer photographers a striking contrast between sacred architecture and the dramatic mountain scenery of southern Alberta. The surrounding grounds change beautifully with Alberta's distinct seasons, from snow-covered winters to the golden light of a prairie summer evening. Our collection features photography and fine art capturing the Calgary Temple throughout the seasons of the Canadian West.
Calgary Temple prints make a meaningful and inspirational gift for members throughout southern Alberta and for anyone who loves the beauty of the Canadian Rockies region. Perfect for weddings, mission homecomings, new homes, and other milestone occasions.
