Cedar City Utah Temple Pictures
The Cedar City Temple crowns Leigh Hill on the west side of Cedar City — a beautifully designed three-story landmark whose exterior echoes the historic Box Elder Stake Tabernacle in Brigham City, with commanding views of the valley and the red rock canyon country below. The first temple built in Iron County and the 17th in Utah, it was dedicated on December 10, 2017 by President Henry B. Eyring, with Elder Jeffrey R. About the Cedar City Utah Temple
Announced on April 6, 2013 by President Thomas S. Monson at the 183rd Annual General Conference — with many members already aware of the Church's acquisition of the Leigh Hill property — the Cedar City Utah Temple fulfilled the long-held hopes of Iron County members who had belonged to the St. George Temple district, approximately 50 miles to the south. The St. George Temple had been serving members from 48 stakes across Southern Utah, eastern Nevada, and northern Arizona, and the Cedar City Temple significantly reduced the burden on it. Ground was broken on August 8, 2015, with Elder L. Whitney Clayton of the Seventy presiding. The site's history runs deep: shortly after Brigham Young led the Saints to the Salt Lake Valley, he called 100 men to Iron County to extract ore from the rich veins of Southern Utah — pioneers who settled the Cedar Valley and persisted through harsh conditions with faith and loyalty.
The 67,000-square-foot temple sits high on Leigh Hill on a 21-acre parcel, with the manicured grounds open to the public for peaceful strolls. The exterior design draws on the aesthetic of the 1860s-era Box Elder Stake Tabernacle in Brigham City, connecting the temple visually to Utah's pioneer architectural heritage. The art glass windows feature a distinctive stained glass design — three temples share these same stained glass windows, crafted by the same artist, each with its own unique color variation. At the dedication, Elder Holland — whose family roots run deep in Southern Utah — was visibly moved. The open house ran October 27 through November 18, 2017, drawing visitors from across the region, and the youth cultural celebration was held at Centrum Arena. The Cedar City Temple serves 17 stakes throughout south-central Utah and east-central Nevada.
