About the Columbia South Carolina Temple
Announced on September 30, 1997 and dedicated on October 16, 1999 by President Gordon B. Hinckley, the Columbia Temple is the 64th operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the 1st built in South Carolina. The 10,700-square-foot temple sits on a beautifully wooded lot in southeastern Columbia, clad in white exterior finish with a single attached spire. The groundbreaking was held the same day as the Hermosillo Sonora Mexico Temple. During the ten-day public open house, nearly 20,000 visitors toured the interior — including the deputy chief of staff to Governor James Hodges, who was occupied assessing hurricane damage and sent a personal letter of appreciation in his place. The governor's representative noted he had long admired a picture of the temple hanging in a home he visited and never dreamed he would one day tour it.
South Carolina carries a rich early Latter-day Saint history that gives the Columbia Temple added significance. Emmanual Masters Murphy — believed to be the first Church member in the state — fellowshipped his neighbors so effectively that when the first missionary arrived in November 1839, he found people already prepared for baptism. Murphy later visited Joseph Smith in Carthage Jail shortly before the martyrdom, and the Prophet shared a prophecy with him about the war that would soon begin in South Carolina — a clear reference to the Civil War that commenced at Fort Sumter just 22 years later. The Angel Moroni statue was struck by lightning and replaced in the years following the dedication. A maintenance renovation in 2023–2024 updated mechanical systems, expanded laundry facilities, and refreshed the baptistry and ordinance worker spaces. The temple currently serves 21 stakes spanning South Carolina, south-central North Carolina, east Georgia, and northeast Tennessee.
