About the Columbus Ohio Temple
Announced on April 25, 1998 — when President Gordon B. Hinckley addressed local members and promised them a temple "soon" — and dedicated on September 4–5, 1999 by President Hinckley, the Columbus Ohio Temple is the 60th operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the 1st modern temple built in Ohio. The Kirtland Temple was the first, but it is no longer an operating temple. The 11,745-square-foot temple sits on 5 acres at 3870 Gateway Boulevard, adjacent to a Church meetinghouse in a wooded area of western Columbus. The exterior is clad in white marble and granite from Spain, with magnolia blossoms featured throughout the exterior and interior design. The temple site carries a poignant connection to early Church history: the original landowner of the property, Abner Clapp, was the brother of Orris Clapp — whose daughter Julia passed away on April 30, 1831, the same day Emma Smith lost her own twins. Julia's husband gave his surviving twins to Joseph and Emma to raise, a gesture that helped soften Emma's grief. During construction, the floor plan was also altered to add a patron comfort room for members traveling long distances — a feature subsequently incorporated into the design of many temples that followed.
The temple closed on August 15, 2020 for an extensive renovation that transformed both its exterior and interior. The renovation added art glass windows inspired by the pink magnolia blossom and surrounding Ohio landscape, introduced natural light to the dressing rooms and sealing room, improved energy efficiency and acoustics, and replaced the interior flooring with Turkish stone. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine joined Church leaders at media day when the temple reopened for public tours. President M. Russell Ballard rededicated the temple on June 4, 2023. Ohio's Latter-day Saint history stretches back to December 1830, when Joseph Smith received revelation designating Ohio as the first gathering place of the restored Church.
