About the Denver Colorado Temple
Dedicated on October 24, 1986 by President Ezra Taft Benson — his only temple dedication as Church president — the Denver Temple is the 40th operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the first built in Colorado. The 29,117-square-foot temple is located south of Denver in the suburb of Centennial, notable for thousands of colorful flowers in the growing season, a calming water feature bordered by benches, a wall of colorful stained glass above the temple entrance, and a gold-leafed Angel Moroni atop its spire. Securing the site proved difficult: the originally preferred location became unavailable, two alternatives were blocked by traffic-concerned citizens, but the original site eventually opened again — and with lessons learned from the earlier opposition, the Church successfully gained community support for the preferred location. Neighbors initially rejected nightly floodlighting; Church officials agreed to turn the lights off by 11:00 p.m. — but in time, the neighbors came to so appreciate the singular beauty of the illuminated temple that they asked for the lights to remain on all night.
In an inspiring act of faith and foresight, one Denver-area stake began a temple fund years before the temple was ever announced, gathering enough donations to meet its full assessment for construction long before the groundbreaking. During the three-week public open house, approximately 140,000 visitors toured the building — far more than expected — resulting in 17,000 copies of the Book of Mormon being placed with interested guests. Historical records note that in 1858, the first member family to settle at what would become Denver was the S.M. Rooker family from Utah. The Denver Temple has undergone several maintenance closures over the years, including a 2019 baptistry renovation and a 2022 renovation of all four instruction rooms. It serves 19 stakes across the central and southern Front Range and western Kansas.
