Elko Nevada Temple Pictures

Set beside the Ruby View Golf Course with the Ruby Mountains rising in the distance, the Elko Temple was dedicated on October 12, 2025 by Elder Gary E. Stevenson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles — becoming, remarkably, only the third temple in Church history dedicated during a period of apostolic interregnum, following the death of President Russell M. Nelson just over two weeks earlier. Announced on April 4, 2021, it became Nevada’s third temple, following the Las Vegas Temple and the Reno Temple, and the 100th operating temple in the United States. Native flower motifs and geometric patterns inspired by the Paiute and Shoshone tribes appear throughout its design, honoring the indigenous heritage of northeastern Nevada. About the Elko Nevada Temple

The Church's roots in Elko stretch back more than a century: early Latter-day Saints gathered in homes, an opera house, and community halls before a local brick chapel was completed in 1928, one so central to community life that a local newspaper described the construction site as "the busiest place in Elko after 6 o'clock in the evening." The Nevada Stake was organized in nearby Ely in 1926, and by 1942 the Humboldt Stake, headquartered in Elko, became the Church's 143rd stake. President Russell M. Nelson announced the Elko Temple on April 4, 2021, one of 20 temples he named that conference, and Elder Paul B. Pieper of the Quorum of the Seventy presided over the groundbreaking on May 7, 2022, praying that as the 12,901-square-foot temple rose, members would "reach out to God with a greater desire to know Him and love Him, and to know and love our neighbors."

A public open house was held August 30 through September 13, 2025. Just two and a half weeks before the scheduled dedication, President Russell M. Nelson passed away on September 27, 2025, leaving President Dallin H. Oaks to lead the Church as president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles during the period of apostolic interregnum that followed. Elder Gary E. Stevenson dedicated the Elko Temple on October 12, 2025, making it only the third temple in Church history dedicated during such an interregnum — after the Nauvoo Illinois Temple in 1846, following the death of Joseph Smith, and the Manti Utah Temple in 1888, following the death of John Taylor. Elder Stevenson reflected that "the small group of Latter-day Saints who participated in the organization of the first branch in Elko likely never imagined 100 years later a temple would be announced and dedicated." The Elko Temple became the Church's 209th operating temple and the 100th dedicated temple in the United States, serving members across a wide district of northeastern Nevada.
