About the Feather River California Temple

Announced by President Russell M. Nelson on October 7, 2018 and dedicated on October 8, 2023 by Elder Ulisses Soares, the Feather River Temple is the 184th operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the 8th built in California. The 41,665-square-foot temple sits on 9.24 acres at 1470 Butte House Road in Yuba City — the former site of the Yuba City California Stake Center, a building that had served local members for more than 40 years before being carefully dismantled in 2020. In a remarkable act of community partnership, over a dozen local faith and charity organizations received materials from the old stake center before demolition — choir chairs, folding tables, a baby grand piano, stone benches, kitchen supplies — with members working alongside neighbors of other faiths to ensure nothing went to waste. The land itself carries its own history of interfaith friendship: in the early 1970s, the property belonged to Mehar Tumber, a devout Sikh peach farmer, who sold it to the Church with a smile on his face, believing the land was blessed by having a house of God as its anchor. His children watched the temple built on their father's former orchard — and said he would have been "absolutely thankful" to see it.

The temple's design celebrates the agricultural abundance of the Northern Sacramento Valley at every turn. Art glass features almond blossoms — the valley's signature crop — rendered in natural whites and yellows against a sky fading from yellow to blue. Decorative paint evokes local flora, rice fields, and alfalfa. Area rugs reference a field of California poppies. The grounds incorporate mature native oaks, redwood, hackberry, and 100-year-old olive trees transplanted from a local orchard. Cherry wood doors honor the region's orchard heritage, and the font railings are an abstraction of the tall reeds found along the Feather River. The public open house ran from August 19 through September 9, 2023.
