About the Fort Lauderdale Florida Temple
Announced on October 2, 2010 and dedicated on May 4, 2014 by President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, the Fort Lauderdale Florida Temple is the 143rd operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the second built in Florida — following the Orlando Temple. The 28,000-square-foot temple sits on a 10-acre site at 3430 Temple Way in Davie, described by its architects as "an interpretation of Neoclassicism" featuring a white precast concrete exterior, tall arched windows, classical columns, and a single 116-foot spire. Securing approval for the temple involved a multi-year process: Church representatives submitted site plans to the Town of Davie in May 2010, held public participation meetings in June 2010, received Town Council approval in March 2011, and broke ground on June 18, 2011, with Elder Walter F. González presiding. The Angel Moroni statue was placed atop the spire on October 24, 2012, a milestone that drew members and onlookers to witness the installation.
The evening before the dedication, President Uchtdorf attended a youth cultural celebration featuring over 1,000 performers from throughout South Florida, celebrating the faith and diversity of the region's Latter-day Saint community. The dedication on May 4, 2014 marked a significant milestone for members of the seven South Florida stakes and Caribbean district who now had a temple within driving distance rather than the five-hour journey to Orlando. The Fort Lauderdale Temple's tropical setting — surrounded by the subtropical vegetation, warm breezes, and vivid sky of South Florida — has made it a distinctive and beloved subject for temple photographers.
