About the Gilbert Arizona Temple
Announced on April 26, 2008 — one of the first temple announcements made by President Thomas S. Monson after becoming Church president — the Gilbert Arizona Temple was dedicated March 2, 2014, making it the 142nd operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the 4th built in Arizona. The 85,326-square-foot temple sits on 15.38 acres at the corner of Greenfield and Pecos Roads. The design team at Architekton in Tempe spent years on the details, deliberately setting out to create something that "won't follow the typical pattern" of other temples. The result is a single-spire building of extraordinary detail, with high-quality precast concrete, fine rustications, and beautifully crafted art glass windows in an ivory exterior unlike anything else in the Church.
The raising of the gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue on May 15, 2012 drew hundreds of onlookers — including students from a grade school across the street who gathered with their families in the parking lot. As the statue was lifted, a group of middle school students spontaneously broke into "I Love to See the Temple," creating one of the more memorable moments in the temple's construction history. The temple's public open house drew 407,020 visitors over 28 days, and a youth cultural celebration the evening before the dedication filled a local park with singers, dancers, and spectators under sheets of rain.
