Hartford Connecticut Temple Pictures
The Hartford Temple stands on an 11-acre site in Farmington, Connecticut — the birthplace and childhood home of Wilford Woodruff, fourth president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Its white granite-clad exterior, Ionic column entrance portico, 115-foot steeple, and formal New England stone fence draw inspiration from the historic First Church of Christ Congregational in Farmington — completed in 1772 — making it one of the most architecturally rooted temples in the Church. Dedicated on November 20, 2016, it was the first temple built in Connecticut. About the Hartford Connecticut Temple
President Thomas S. Monson announced the Hartford Connecticut Temple in the opening session of the October 2010 General Conference — 18 years after plans for a Hartford temple had first been announced, then set aside in favor of the Boston Massachusetts Temple and a planned Harrison New York Temple. The 20,000-square-foot temple was dedicated on November 20, 2016 by President Henry B. Eyring of the First Presidency, with Elder Jeffrey R. Holland also in attendance. Tens of thousands toured the building during a three-week public open house from September 30 through October 22, 2016. The former property owner, Peter Fishman, initially had reservations about the project until he was shown a rendering and given an explanation of the temple's purpose — whereupon he became an enthusiastic supporter and said the Church was proposing "an incredibly beautiful, very New England-appropriate temple." A beautiful three-tiered bronze fountain was installed at the entrance, and the grounds are enclosed by a low New England-style stone fence that completes the colonial aesthetic.
The temple's location in Farmington — the birthplace of President Wilford Woodruff — is one of the most remarkable geographic details of any temple in the Church. Woodruff was born in Farmington on March 1, 1807, and was baptized in 1833. He later served as Church president from 1889 to 1898, and it was under his administration that the Salt Lake Temple was finally dedicated in 1893 after 40 years of construction. The Hartford Temple has been named one of the most beautiful places of worship by Architectural Digest — a recognition shared by only a small number of temples worldwide. It serves 7 stakes throughout Connecticut, eastern New York, and western Massachusetts.
