Helena Montana Temple Pictures

Built using an innovative modular construction process — its sections manufactured in Birmingham, Alabama, then trucked to Montana and assembled on site — the Helena Temple was the second temple built in the Treasure State, following the Billings Temple. Announced by President Russell M. Nelson on April 4, 2021, one of 20 temples he named that conference, it was dedicated just over two years later, on June 18, 2023, by Elder Gary E. Stevenson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. Its art deco-inspired design echoes Helena’s own late 19th-century architecture, with an entry portico whose low arch references the Richardsonian Romanesque buildings found throughout the city. About the Helena Montana Temple

The Church's roots in Montana run deep — Elder Gary E. Stevenson noted at the temple's dedication that the Montana Mission was organized within just three years of the Salt Lake Temple's own dedication. By the end of 1920, more than 1,000 Latter-day Saints called Montana home, and in 1953 Elders Spencer W. Kimball and LeGrand Richards organized the state's first stake in Butte; by 1960, Church membership had grown to nearly 24,000. President Russell M. Nelson announced the Helena Montana Temple on April 4, 2021, and Elder Vern P. Stanfill of the Seventy presided over the groundbreaking just two months and twenty-two days later, on June 26, 2021, reflecting on "the many who have lived in the shadow of these mountains who...sacrificed, served, and hoped for this day."

The Helena Temple became the first Latter-day Saint temple built using a design-manufacture-install process, with its modules constructed off-site in Birmingham, Alabama, then transported to Helena and connected and finished on location — allowing the roughly 9,794-square-foot temple to rise in less than two years from the start of construction. Its art deco styling honors Helena's own architectural heritage, particularly in the low arch of its entry portico, which echoes the Richardsonian Romanesque buildings found throughout the city. A public open house ran from May 18 through June 3, 2023, and the day before the dedication, the Church announced that temple cornerstone ceremonies would no longer be part of future dedications going forward, citing advances in construction techniques. Elder Gary E. Stevenson dedicated the Helena Temple in two sessions on June 18, 2023, as the Church's 178th operating temple, serving members across stakes in Helena, Butte, Bozeman, and Great Falls.
