About the Houston Texas Temple
Announced on October 1, 1999 and dedicated on August 26, 2000 by President Gordon B. Hinckley, the Houston Temple was the 100th announced temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the second built in Texas — following the Dallas Temple. The 33,970-square-foot temple sits on 15.9 acres at 15725 Champion Forest Drive in the Klein area of northwest Houston. Before its dedication, the closest temple for Houston members was in Dallas — a five-hour drive from the nation's fourth-largest city. The land itself carries a remarkable story: the original owner, developer Don Hand, purchased 2,000 acres in the area and had already envisioned a beautiful future for the property. When the Houston economy crashed in the mid-1980s and Hand faced potential bankruptcy, he prayed for deliverance and made a promise to repay the Lord in the future. He was spared. Years later, when Church officials sought the property — which had briefly been unavailable when President Hinckley first visited the area — the land came back to market and Hand worked personally with the Church to see the temple built on his former holdings.
On August 26, 2017 — the 17th anniversary of its dedication — Hurricane Harvey's historic flooding breached the temple, filling the baptistry to the top and reaching waist depth in some basement areas, with several inches of water ruining carpet and furniture on the main floor. The temple closed for repairs and was rededicated in a private session on April 22, 2018. A second Houston-area temple — originally announced as the Houston Texas South Temple and later renamed the Fort Bend Texas Temple — was announced by President Russell M. Nelson on April 7, 2024, to be built in Missouri City in Fort Bend County, making Houston the twelfth city in the world to have more than one Latter-day Saint temple. The Houston Temple serves 22 stakes throughout southeast Texas.
