About the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple
Announced March 3, 1937 and dedicated September 23–25, 1945 by President George Albert Smith — the only temple he ever dedicated — the Idaho Falls Temple was the first built in Idaho and the first in the Church designed with a central spire, marking a return to vertical design after three consecutive temples had been built without towers. The 85,624-square-foot structure sits on 8.28 acres at 1000 Memorial Drive, directly overlooking the Snake River and the beautiful waterfall feature just to the east. Construction began in 1939 but was delayed four years by World War II material shortages, with the exterior complete by 1941 and the interior finished only after the war ended. Remarkably, the design was inspired by a vision of an ancient Nephite temple beheld by architect John Fetzer Sr., who had prayed for guidance — and when workers excavated through sand for the foundation, they encountered solid lava rock beneath, providing an ideal natural base for the building.
The Idaho Falls Temple holds a distinguished place among the Church's oldest and most historically significant buildings. It is one of only seven temples where patrons progress through four ordinance rooms before the Celestial Room, and its progressive-style rooms feature beautiful hand-painted murals — one of only three temples in the Church with full mural paintings including the Celestial Room. In September 1983, a helicopter installed an Angel Moroni statue atop the previously statue-less spire. Following a two-year renovation, the temple was rededicated June 4, 2017 by President Henry B. Eyring, with the historic murals carefully restored and 12,000 Idaho youth celebrating the occasion in a packed Pocatello arena.
