About the Kansas City Missouri Temple
Announced on October 4, 2008 by President Thomas S. Monson and dedicated on May 6, 2012 by President Monson, the Kansas City Missouri Temple is the 137th operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the 2nd built in Missouri, following the St. Louis Temple. The 32,000-square-foot temple sits on 8.05 acres at 7001 Searcy Creek Parkway in Kansas City's Northland district, featuring twin precast concrete spires reaching 150 feet, beautifully landscaped grounds, and an interior crafted with white oak harvested from Adam-ondi-Ahman — the sacred Missouri valley where some of the most profound early Restoration events took place.
The Kansas City Temple carries the weight of Missouri's Latter-day Saint history in a particularly meaningful way. In the 1830s, Joseph Smith dedicated temple sites in Independence, Far West, and Adam-ondi-Ahman — none of which were ever built, as the Saints were driven from Missouri by an extermination order in 1838. Nearly 175 years later, the Kansas City Temple fulfilled that long-deferred promise of a house of the Lord in western Missouri. At the dedication, President Monson noted that Clay County was "an area where the Prophet Joseph Smith walked and where significant events took place in the early days following the restoration of the gospel." The evening before the dedication, over 3,000 youth performed "Of One Heart in the Heartland" — a cultural celebration honoring the history and sacrifice of Missouri's early Latter-day Saints.
