Announced concurrently with the Portland Oregon, Toronto Ontario, San Diego California, and Bogotá Colombia temples, and dedicated on December 16, 1989 by President Gordon B. Hinckley, the Las Vegas Temple is the 43rd operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the 1st built in Nevada. The 80,350-square-foot temple sits on 10.2 acres, with six spires modeled closely after the Portland Oregon Temple — the floor plan of the Las Vegas Temple was directly adapted from the Portland design. When the announcement came, local members answered with extraordinary enthusiasm: they were asked to contribute toward construction and raised $11 million — an astounding 428 percent of their assessment. More than 6,000 members attended the groundbreaking ceremony, held at the Las Vegas Convention Center downtown, with a recorded presentation of Church leaders turning earth at the temple site. During the 23-day open house, 297,480 people toured the temple — with more than 99,000 continuing into the missionary pavilion afterward, generating dozens of baptisms in the weeks that followed.

The Angel Moroni statue on the temple's east central spire faces east — away from the city — symbolically heralding the Second Coming of the Lord. One of the temple's most distinctive architectural features is the Celestial Room, with its breathtaking floor-to-ceiling windows that allow natural light to pour in and cast miniature rainbows across the walls throughout the day. In recent years, the temple grounds were renovated on the east side with a new plaza and herringbone-patterned pavers, and the Angel Moroni statue was removed, regilded with fresh gold leaf, and reinstalled. A second temple — the Lone Mountain Nevada Temple — is currently under construction in the northwest Las Vegas area to serve the area's growing membership.
