About the Lubbock Texas Temple
Announced on April 2, 2000 and dedicated on April 21, 2002 by President Gordon B. Hinckley, the Lubbock Temple is the 109th operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the 3rd built in Texas, following the Dallas Temple and the Houston Temple. The 16,498-square-foot temple sits on 2.7 acres at 7016 Frankford Avenue, just behind the Lubbock Texas Stake Center, and is clad in Empress white and majestic gray granite quarried in China. The exterior walls feature rich symbolism rendered in etched granite, and stained glass windows bring warm light to the interior throughout the day. The groundbreaking was held on the same day as the Monterrey Mexico Temple — November 4, 2000 — a fact that Elder Rex D. Pinegar marked by drawing a parallel between earthly and heavenly homes in his dedicatory remarks.
When the temple was announced, the emotional response of local members was striking. First temple president Jay B. Jensen described their reaction: "Many said it was like a dream, that they couldn't believe this was really happening." The temple serves members from seven stakes and one district spanning West Texas and southeast New Mexico — a vast geographic area where members had previously made long drives to Dallas or Houston for temple worship. The Lubbock Temple's compact but beautifully designed 16,498 square feet make it one of the smaller operating temples in the Church, yet it serves its far-flung community with quiet faithfulness.
