Manhattan New York Temple Pictures
Located a block from Central Park and diagonally across from Lincoln Center, the Manhattan Temple was built inside an existing Church office building at the intersection of Broadway, Columbus Avenue, and West 65th Street. Dedicated by President Gordon B. Hinckley on June 13, 2004 as the second temple built in New York and the world’s 119th operating temple, it closed on March 2, 2024 for an extensive multi-year renovation expected to be complete around 2027. About the Manhattan New York Temple
New York holds a foundational place in Church history — Joseph Smith received his First Vision just outside Palmyra in 1820, and the Church was formally organized in nearby Fayette on April 6, 1830. Nearly two centuries later, President Gordon B. Hinckley told a special regional conference in New York City on March 24, 2002 that a temple would be built in Manhattan within two years. Official plans followed on August 7, 2002, and the temple was built inside an existing multipurpose Church office building originally constructed in 1976, with a steeple and statue of the angel Moroni added to distinguish it as a house of the Lord. Groundbreaking took place on September 23, 2002, and after a monthlong open house that drew members of the national and international media, President Hinckley dedicated the Manhattan Temple in four sessions on June 13, 2004, becoming the second temple in New York after the Palmyra Temple.
On August 28, 2023, the First Presidency announced that the Manhattan New York Temple would close for an extensive renovation, and the temple held its final sessions on March 2, 2024. The project, expected to take approximately three years, includes a striking redesign featuring building-height stained glass, a soaring golden spire, and a new ground-floor visitors' area with a lighted marble reproduction of the Christus statue visible from the street. The third-floor meetinghouse is also being upgraded, with local congregations meeting elsewhere in the city during construction. Members of the temple district have been encouraged to attend the Philadelphia Pennsylvania Temple or the Hartford Connecticut Temple in the meantime, with a public open house and rededication to be announced as the renovation nears completion.
