About the McAllen Texas Temple

Announced by President Russell M. Nelson on October 5, 2019 and dedicated on October 8, 2023 by Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf, the McAllen Temple is the 183rd operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the 5th built in Texas. The 27,897-square-foot temple sits on 10.61 acres at the northwest corner of Second Street and West Trenton Road, with a central spire reaching 108 feet. The exterior uses beige precast concrete panels in a design that marries Spanish colonial architecture with the citrus-growing heritage of the Rio Grande Valley. Barbed quatrefoils, scrolls, ribbons, and citrus blossom motifs decorate the exterior and continue throughout the interior art glass and millwork. The blue tones in the design evoke the bluebonnet — Texas's state flower — and the nearby Gulf of Mexico.

The McAllen Temple's dedication was particularly meaningful for the heavily Hispanic community it serves, which spans both sides of the Rio Grande. At the dedication, Elder Uchtdorf — who had visited the U.S.-Mexico border that same weekend — said: "In a world with a lot of walls, we need to continue to build bridges. The temple is a beautiful symbol for that peaceful effort, and it will radiate throughout the community here...and it will spread out all across the world." Local member Elizabeth Rodriguez de Anda, moved to tears at the open house, said: "I am grateful to our Heavenly Father for this modern-day miracle." The McAllen Temple was dedicated on the same day as the Feather River California Temple — one of three temples dedicated on October 8, 2023.
