Located in Central Point, just outside Medford, the Medford Temple was the second temple built in Oregon, following the Portland Temple. Announced by President Gordon B. Hinckley on March 15, 1999, it was dedicated by President James E. Faust on April 16, 2000 as the Church’s 79th operating temple. Finished in gray granite quarried from Mount Airy, North Carolina, its classic single-spire design serves Latter-day Saints throughout southern Oregon and the Redwood Coast of northern California. About the Medford Oregon Temple
President Gordon B. Hinckley announced the Medford Temple on March 15, 1999, bringing a house of the Lord to Latter-day Saints throughout southern Oregon and northern California who had previously traveled to the Portland Temple, several hours to the north. Elder D. Lee Tobler of the Seventy presided over the groundbreaking on May 20, 1999, telling those gathered that the new temple would be "another ensign to the restoration of the gospel... not only for you, but... for your neighbors. It is an ensign for all." He added that the temple was being built not just for the members of that day, but for generations of families yet to come.
The finished 10,700-square-foot temple, clad in gray granite quarried from Mount Airy, North Carolina, follows the classic, single-spire design common to many temples built during this era. A public open house held March 24 through 31, 2000, drew nearly 35,000 visitors, and President James E. Faust dedicated the Medford Temple on April 16, 2000. More than two decades later, in the fall of 2021, the temple underwent a minor renovation project, and on October 18, 2021, a new gold-leafed statue of the angel Moroni was installed atop its spire. The temple continues to serve members from five stakes across southern Oregon and California's Redwood Coast.
