The Montpelier Temple rises in the heart of historic downtown Montpelier — adjacent to the beloved Montpelier Tabernacle on Washington Street, in a community of around 2,500 people nestled just north of Bear Lake along Idaho’s southeastern border. The eighth temple built in Idaho and a new landmark for Bear Lake County, it opens for a public open house on September 10–26, 2026 and will be dedicated on October 18, 2026. About the Montpelier Idaho Temple
Announced by President Russell M. Nelson on April 3, 2022, at the April 2022 General Conference, and to be dedicated on October 18, 2026, the Montpelier Idaho Temple is the eighth temple built in Idaho, with the most recently-dedicated being the Burley Temple. The 27,000-square-foot temple sits on a 2.6-acre parcel on Washington Street between North 5th and North 6th Streets, directly east of the Montpelier Tabernacle — which was built in the late 1910s and renovated in 2015. Acquiring the site required the Church to purchase nine properties in the block, including the former City Hall building constructed at the same time as the tabernacle and demolished in March 2021. The City granted its interest in an adjacent alleyway, and several residences were demolished or relocated, with the historic John A. Bagley House — a Queen Anne Victorian known as the Purple Sage, listed on the National Register of Historic Places — preserved nearby. The groundbreaking was held June 17, 2023, with Elder Ryan K. Olsen, General Authority Seventy, presiding over an audience of more than 600 members.
Montpelier and Bear Lake County have deep Latter-day Saint pioneer roots — the area was settled by Church members in 1863, and the community's strong faith heritage has shaped its character for over 160 years. The temple serves members throughout southeastern Idaho, southwestern Wyoming, and northern Utah's Bear River region who previously traveled to the Idaho Falls Temple or Logan Temple for their temple worship. The public open house runs September 10–26, 2026, with a media day on September 8 and invited guest tours on September 9. The dedicatory session on October 18, 2026 will be broadcast to all units in the temple district.
