About the Oakland California Temple
Announced January 23, 1961 and dedicated November 17–19, 1964 by President David O. McKay, the Oakland Temple is the 13th operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the second built in California, following the Los Angeles Temple. The 80,157-square-foot structure sits on 18.1 acres on an East Bay hillside at 4770 Lincoln Avenue, faced with Sierra white granite quarried in Raymond, California. Its five-spire design — the first of its kind in the Church — was inspired by sacred sites in Asia, including the Taj Mahal and Angkor Wat, to reflect the cultural diversity of Bay Area. Two large relief sculptures adorn the exterior: the north face depicts Christ teaching in the Holy Land, while the south face shows the resurrected Lord appearing to the ancient inhabitants of America.
The Oakland Temple's history is rich with prophetic fulfillment. In 1847, Brigham Young wrote that "in the process of time, the shores of the Pacific may be overlooked from the temple of the Lord." In 1928, President George Albert Smith, while gazing across the Bay from San Francisco's Nob Hill, reportedly exclaimed that he could envision a great white temple on the East Bay hills — a vision fulfilled 36 years later. At the dedication, President McKay — who had suffered a severe stroke and arrived in a wheelchair — miraculously rose, walked to the pulpit, and personally delivered the dedicatory prayer to a stunned congregation. The dedication was also the first ever transmitted by closed-circuit television to an outside building. The temple underwent a major renovation in 2018–2019, adding windows to the main floor for the first time and restoring the mid-century modern vision of original architect Harold W. Burton. President Dallin H. Oaks rededicated it June 16, 2019, with more than 123,000 people touring during the open house.
