About the Oklahoma City Oklahoma Temple
Announced on March 14, 1999 and dedicated on July 30, 2000 by President James E. Faust, the Oklahoma City Temple is the 95th operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the 1st built in Oklahoma. The 10,890-square-foot temple sits on 1 acre at 12030 North Mustang Road in Yukon — just west of Oklahoma City — and is clad in beige limestone with a single attached spire. At the groundbreaking on July 3, 1999, Elder Rex D. Pinegar spoke powerfully in the shadow of recent Oklahoma City tragedies — the 1995 federal building bombing and a devastating tornado just weeks before — expressing that the temple would be a profound blessing for a community that had endured so much. "Turning the ceremonial shovelful of soil," he said, was symbolic of "turning our lives over to Christ and keeping His commandments." The open house in July 2000 drew visitors from across the region.
The temple closed on October 15, 2017 for an extensive renovation that transformed both its exterior appearance and interior entirely. The renovation added limestone cladding, upgraded all mechanical and electrical systems, redesigned the landscaping, and created a distinctive circular feature at the entrance. The Angel Moroni statue, which had originally faced east, was repositioned to face southwest over the new entrance during construction. President Henry B. Eyring — second counselor in the First Presidency — rededicated the temple on May 19, 2019, with a new public open house held April 24 through May 1, 2019. The temple serves 15 stakes throughout Oklahoma and south-central Kansas.
