About the Oquirrh Mountain Utah Temple
Announced October 1, 2005 and dedicated August 21–23, 2009 by President Thomas S. Monson, the Oquirrh Mountain Temple is the 130th operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the 13th built in Utah. The 60,000-square-foot temple is clad in Uinta Gold Granite and features a single spire topped by an Angel Moroni statue. From its elevated position on the bluff, the temple commands a remarkable panoramic view that takes in the Wasatch Mountains to the east and three other Salt Lake Valley temples simultaneously — the Salt Lake Temple, Jordan River Utah Temple, and Draper Utah Temple.
The Oquirrh Mountain Temple carries several notable distinctions. It was the first temple in Church history built in the same city as another operating temple — making South Jordan the first city in the world with two temples. President Monson dedicated it on his 82nd birthday, and the crowd gathered for the cornerstone ceremony spontaneously broke into a birthday song in his honor. During the public open house, lightning struck the original Angel Moroni statue, blackening the face, arm, and trumpet; a replacement statue was installed just 10 days before the dedication.
