About the Orem Utah Temple

Announced by President Russell M. Nelson on October 5, 2019, at the General Women's Session of General Conference, and dedicated on January 21, 2024 by Elder D. Todd Christofferson, the Orem Temple is the 188th operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the 19th built in Utah, and the 6th in Utah County. The 71,998-square-foot temple is clad in Pedras Salgadas granite from Portugal, fabricated by Transgranitos, with parapets and window surrounds carved by Quora in Michigan. At the groundbreaking on September 5, 2020, Elder Evan A. Schmutz — who grew up in Orem — said the temple "will act as a beacon, drawing the gaze of millions as they pass by this hallowed ground." Three great-great-grandchildren of Niels Williamson — a Norwegian convert who homesteaded the original 15-acre property in the 1870s — watched the groundbreaking from the fence line of their own adjacent land.

The temple's design draws deeply from the history of its site. The Lake View area of southwest Orem was historically known for its fruit orchards, and the cherry blossom became the temple's signature design element — woven throughout the art glass, wood panels, metal handrails, carpet, painted millwork, and light fixtures. The first-story art glass evokes the nearby Utah Lake wetlands with cattails and water grasses, while upper story windows feature cherry blossoms, leaves, and fruit. The interior stone is Crema Marfil marble from Turkey, with the carpet featuring diamond patterns bordered by cherry branches and blossoms. The 50-day public open house — October 27 through December 16, 2023 — drew visitors from across Utah County.
