About the Orlando Florida Temple
Announced in February 1990 with an explicit First Presidency statement that "Orlando was selected because it is a central location with good highways from all parts of the state," and dedicated on October 9, 1994 by President Howard W. Hunter, the Orlando Temple is the 46th operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the 1st built in Florida. At 80,118 square feet on 13.1 acres at 9900 South Orange Blossom Trail in Windermere, the temple is characterized by its white exterior, graceful classical columns, arched windows, a beautifully landscaped reflecting pool, and a generous planting of palm trees and tropical shrubs throughout the grounds. It is one of only two temples dedicated by President Hunter during his brief time as president of the Church — the other being the Bountiful Utah Temple, dedicated just ten weeks later. For nearly two decades after its dedication, it stood as the only Latter-day Saint temple in all of Florida.
The temple closed on July 1, 2024 for a major renovation with a flexible timeline — the project scope was intentionally kept open to accommodate discoveries during construction. Renovations underway include a full interior refresh, updated mechanical systems, redesigned grounds, and restoration of the temple's sacred spaces. Interior renovation work is well advanced as of mid-2026, with reopening expected at a future date to be announced. When the Orlando Temple reopens, it will join the Fort Lauderdale Temple and the Tallahassee Temple as one of three operating temples in Florida, with two additional temples under construction in Tampa and Jacksonville.
