About the Phoenix Arizona Temple
Announced on May 24, 2008 by President Thomas S. Monson — who noted that the nearby Mesa Temple was then serving more patrons than any other temple outside Utah — the Phoenix Temple was dedicated on November 16, 2014 by President Monson, making it the 144th operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the 5th in Arizona. The 64,870-square-foot temple sits on 5.19 acres at 5220 West Pinnacle Peak Road and is built from earth-toned precast concrete panels — a deliberate design choice made in response to the concerns of neighboring residents. The temple's construction story is one of the most extensively documented community approval processes in Church history: between 2009 and 2011 the Church redesigned the building from scratch, going from a two-story structure requiring rezoning to a single-story building with a full basement that complied with all existing residential zoning requirements. The redesign reduced the building height to 30 feet (with an unregulated spire) and won over many previously skeptical neighbors with its beautifully landscaped grounds and soft nighttime lighting.
The Angel Moroni statue was raised atop the spire on May 15, 2013, to an enthusiastic audience of workers and members who gathered on the grounds to witness the milestone. The public open house ran October 10 through November 1, 2014, with Arizona Governor Jan Brewer among the notable guests — saying afterward, "I have learned that the purpose of the temple is even more beautiful than the building." The temple serves members throughout northwest metropolitan Phoenix and Yavapai County.
