About the Pocatello Idaho Temple

Announced on April 2, 2017 by President Thomas S. Monson at General Conference and dedicated on November 14, 2021 by President M. Russell Ballard — accompanied by Elder Neil L. Andersen, who grew up in the Pocatello area — the Pocatello Temple is the 170th operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the sixth built in Idaho. The 75,000-square-foot temple sits high on the east bench at 2670 Alvord Loop, just east of the Pocatello Idaho Highland Stake Center. Pocatello's long wait for a temple is part of the building's identity: in the 1930s, Pocatello was considered as the site for Idaho's first temple before the Idaho Falls location was chosen instead — in part because bringing water to Pocatello's proposed hillside site proved too difficult. More than eight decades later, that same hillside became the site of the temple the city had waited so long to receive.

The temple's interior is one of the most distinctive of any recent Church building. The grand staircase is clad in travertine limestone and features occasional naturally occurring vertebrate fossils embedded in the stone — a detail that makes the Pocatello Temple literally unique in Church history. A beautiful art glass grouping in the chapel depicts Jesus Christ holding a lamb; the glass was salvaged from a church in the eastern United States and carefully restored for its sacred new home. The interior finish features dark wood paneling and carved wood moldings, vibrant patterned rugs, hand-painted ceilings with deep pink, dark green, and gold-leaf accents, and stunning stained glass throughout. The public open house — held September through October 2021 with COVID-era adjustments — drew visitors from across southeast Idaho.
