About the Portland Oregon Temple
Announced in April 1984 and dedicated August 19–21, 1989 by President Gordon B. Hinckley, the Portland Oregon Temple was the first temple built in the state of Oregon and the 42nd operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Built on 7.3 acres of land in Lake Oswego — originally purchased in the 1960s for a Church junior college — the 80,500-square-foot temple is clad in white Vermont marble with a green Vermont slate roof. A serene reflection pool sits on the east side at the base of the main spire, while a fountain on the west side feeds an infinity pool, making the grounds among the most beautiful of any temple.
The Portland Temple holds a unique geographic distinction: it was constructed directly on the Willamette Meridian, the principal north-south survey line for the entire states of Oregon and Washington. More than 314,232 visitors toured the temple during its public open house — at the time, the fifth highest open house attendance in Church history. The temple's floor plan was later adapted for the Las Vegas Nevada Temple.
