About the Provo City Center Utah Temple

The story of the Provo City Center Temple begins with the Provo Tabernacle — a beloved landmark built in the 1880s, finally dedicated in 1898, and home to concerts, commencement ceremonies, funerals, community events, and countless Church gatherings for over a century. On December 17, 2010, a four-alarm fire devastated the interior of the tabernacle, sparing only the exterior walls and spires. As tearful crowds gathered throughout that day, watching smoke billow from the iconic building, no one knew what would come next. Among the ashes, searchers discovered a giclée print of Harry Anderson's "The Second Coming" — the image completely blackened by fire except for the untouched figure of Jesus Christ himself — a discovery many considered a sacred sign of things to come.

On October 1, 2011, President Thomas S. Monson announced at General Conference that the tabernacle shell would be rebuilt as a second temple for Provo. A gasp of surprise filled the Conference Center. The Provo City Center Temple was formally announced, groundbreaking was held on May 12, 2012, presided over by Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, who called the decision "inspired." After meticulous reconstruction, the temple opened to the public January 15 through March 5, 2016, with over 800,000 people touring its interior. The building was painstakingly restored to its Victorian heritage: surviving interior components like wood moldings and balustrades were preserved as models, the original 147-foot central tower was recreated, a magnificent 17-foot four-tiered Victorian bronze fountain was installed on the grounds, and a charming Victorian pavilion was built for wedding parties and non-patron visitors. Elder Dallin H. Oaks dedicated the 150th operating temple of the Church on March 20, 2016.
