About the Raleigh North Carolina Temple
Announced on September 3, 1998 and dedicated on December 18, 1999 by President Gordon B. Hinckley, the Raleigh Temple is the 68th operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the 1st built in North Carolina. The 12,864-square-foot temple sits on 3.17 acres at 574 Bryan Drive in Apex. The timing of the dedication carried deep meaning: it fell just five days before Christmas, as the world prepared to observe the birth of the Savior, and just five days before the 194th birthday of Joseph Smith — a fact noted with reverence in the dedicatory sessions. Among those present was Blanche Keith, an 83-year-old granddaughter of Durham Hall Smith — the first convert baptized in Raleigh's county, on September 15, 1895 — connecting the dedication to the earliest roots of the Church in North Carolina. Cecil Reese, the first stake president in North Carolina (called in 1961), also spoke, recalling members who had sold everything except their cars to fund trips to the temples in Arizona or Salt Lake City.
The temple closed on January 7, 2018 for an extensive 20-month renovation that dramatically transformed the building. The exterior was re-clad in beige limestone with new art glass windows featuring the dogwood blossom — North Carolina's state flower — the entrance portico was enclosed, the tower was raised by 10 feet, and all mechanical and electrical systems were fully upgraded. The redesigned exterior gave the building a substantially more impressive silhouette. A spirited community temple 5K run was held on Labor Day 2019, drawing more than 600 participants in celebration of the reopening. President M. Russell Ballard rededicated the temple on October 13, 2019. The temple now serves 17 stakes throughout eastern and north-central North Carolina.
