About the Reno Nevada Temple
Announced on April 2, 2000 and dedicated on April 23, 2000 — Easter Sunday — by President Thomas S. Monson, the Reno Nevada Temple is the 75th operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the second built in Nevada, following the Las Vegas Temple. It was dedicated on the same day as the Memphis Tennessee Temple. The groundbreaking was held on Pioneer Day, July 24, 1999, with Elder Rex D. Pinegar of the Seventy presiding and drawing a powerful parallel between the pioneer sacrifice in the Nauvoo Temple and the spiritual strength members today can draw from the temple: "From the temple experience they had gained a vision of who they were and what their relationship was with God," he said. "We need the Lord's strength in our own lives and in the lives of our children." The temple serves 9 stakes throughout western Nevada and northeastern California — a geographically wide district spanning some of the most sparsely populated terrain in the American West.
The Reno Temple's compact and elegant design has served its community reliably for over 25 years. A minor renovation in 2024 replaced aging exterior stairs and made additional improvements, with the temple briefly closing and reopening by December 1 of that year. The timing of the Easter Sunday dedication carries its own significance: the temple was dedicated as Christians worldwide observed the resurrection of the Savior, whose atonement and resurrection are at the heart of every ordinance performed within temple walls.
