About the Rexburg Idaho Temple
Announced on October 5, 2003 — just three and a half years after the announcement that two-year Ricks College would become four-year Brigham Young University–Idaho — and dedicated on February 10, 2008 by President Thomas S. Monson, the Rexburg Temple is the 119th operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the third built in Idaho, following the Idaho Falls Temple and the Boise Temple. The 57,985-square-foot, five-story temple sits on a prominent hilltop just west of the BYU–Idaho campus, making it visible for miles in every direction across the flat Upper Snake River Valley. Unlike most temple groundbreakings which are limited to invited guests, the Rexburg groundbreaking was open to all — and over 8,000 people crowded onto the field where the temple now stands. The Rexburg Temple joins its sister institutions — BYU in Provo and BYU–Hawaii in Laie — as the three Church universities each located directly adjacent to a temple.
The temple's interior is among the most regionally distinctive of any in the Church. Rexburg artist Leon Parson created the breathtaking hand-painted ordinance room murals depicting the wildlife and landscapes of the Upper Snake River Valley, including the Grand Tetons, the sage-covered plains, and the rivers and wetlands of eastern Idaho. Utah artist Tom Holdman created the wheat stalk motif that runs throughout approximately 700 art glass windowpanes — a tribute to the widespread agricultural heritage of the surrounding valley. The finest materials were used throughout, including wood imported from Africa and stone from around the world. A public garden on the west side of the temple grounds is open for quiet reflection. The temple serves 28 stakes throughout the Upper Snake River Valley, with a second Rexburg-area temple — the Teton River Idaho Temple — currently under construction just north of the city.
