About the Richmond Virginia Temple

Announced by President Russell M. Nelson on April 1, 2018 and dedicated on May 7, 2023 by President Dallin H. Oaks of the First Presidency, the Richmond Temple is the 177th operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the 1st ever built in Virginia. The 39,202-square-foot temple sits on 12 acres at 10915 Staples Mill Road in Glen Allen, Henrico County — a wooded site whose landscaping draws inspiration from the colonial gardens of Williamsburg, with dogwood, magnolia, white oak, boxwood, and Virginia bluebells selected for the grounds. When the announcement was made, 89-year-old Ruby Barley — among the first baptized members in Spotsylvania County — called it "a dream come true." For years, Virginia members had endured lengthy drives through heavy Washington D.C. traffic to attend the temple. The groundbreaking was a small, COVID-restricted ceremony on April 11, 2020, presided over by Elder Randall K. Bennett.

The temple's design is one of the most regionally rooted of any recent Church temple, weaving Virginia's colonial and Jeffersonian heritage throughout every detail. The exterior is clad in Moleanos limestone from Portugal, articulated with a Jeffersonian Doric order and the dogwood flower motif — Virginia's state tree and flower — which appears in etched stone panels, art glass, carpet carvings, door hardware, and baptistry railings throughout. The interior marble flooring is adapted from a diamond parquet pattern found at Monticello. A restored circa-1920 stained glass piece, "The Good Shepherd" by Flanagan and Beidenweg, graces the entry. The color palette of blues, golds, and reds throughout the carpets, decorative paint, and art glass evokes early American design. At the dedication, President Oaks said: "Every temple is beautiful, but this is an especially impressive House of the Lord for this great Commonwealth of Virginia." The public open house ran March 25–April 15, 2023.
