About the San Diego California Temple
Announced in 1984 and dedicated on April 25, 1993 by President Gordon B. Hinckley, the San Diego Temple serves Latter-day Saints throughout the San Diego area and northwestern Mexico. It was the 45th temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Built on 7.2 acres near the La Jolla community, the 72,000-square-foot temple features a distinctive exterior of marble chips in plaster that gives it a brilliant white glow. Many affectionately call the temple a castle. Connecting its two main towers is a star-shaped glass atrium, making the temple's architecture unlike any other in the Church.
After more than 30 years of continuous operation, the temple closed in July 2023 for a extensive renovations, which included replacing aging art glass windows, exterior repainting, updated landscaping, improved accessibility, and refreshed interior finishes. The renovations concluded in 2026 with a public open house, giving members and visitors a rare opportunity to tour the building before it returned to sacred use. After the open house, the temple rededicated on August 23, 2026 by President D. Todd Christofferson.
