Spokane Washington Temple Pictures
Dedicated in a series of sessions August 22–23, 1999, the Spokane Temple was the second temple built in the state of Washington, following the Seattle Temple. Announced by President Gordon B. Hinckley on August 13, 1998, its groundbreaking was held the same day as the Detroit Michigan Temple’s — the first time in Church history that two temple groundbreakings took place on the same day. Local children and youth played a memorable role in preparing the grounds, from clearing rocks with toy wheelbarrows to laying sod by hand. About the Spokane Washington Temple
President Gordon B. Hinckley announced the Spokane Temple on August 13, 1998, one of a new generation of smaller temples designed to bring the blessings of the temple closer to Latter-day Saints living far from existing houses of the Lord. Groundbreaking took place on October 10, 1998, held on the same day as the groundbreaking for the Detroit Michigan Temple, marking the first time in Church history that two temple groundbreakings occurred within a single 12-hour period. As construction progressed, local children and youth eagerly took part: on July 4, 1999, families gathered to clear rocks from the landscape, with young children hauling stones away in their own toy wheelbarrows before adult members laid sod for the finished lawn.
That April, a truck driver from Albuquerque, New Mexico named Rush Hashie transported the temple's statue of the angel Moroni, its baptismal font, and the sculpted oxen to the construction site, not realizing the significance of his cargo until he arrived. Overwhelmed with emotion upon learning what he had carried, he went to a nearby grove of trees east of the temple and wept. A public open house ran from August 6 through 14, 1999, drawing nearly 52,000 visitors, including Spokane Mayor John Talbott, who remarked that he could almost sense the spiritual atmosphere throughout the tour. President Gordon B. Hinckley dedicated the Spokane Temple in a series of sessions on August 22 and 23, 1999, and a decade later, in March 2009, the temple received a new statue of the angel Moroni atop its spire.
