About the St. George Utah Temple

Construction on the St. George Utah Temple began in November 1871 under the direction of Brigham Young, who considered it a personal priority and spent his winters in St. George to oversee the work. Built from locally quarried red sandstone — later plastered and painted white to gleam against the surrounding red rock buttes — the temple was first dedicated on April 6–8, 1877, making it the first temple completed in the history of the restored Church and the only one finished during Brigham Young's lifetime. The temple stands 175 feet tall on a city block near St. George's historic district, sharing grounds with a public visitors' center that features a replica of Thorvaldsen's Christus statue.

The St. George Temple holds a singular place in Church history: it was the first temple where endowments for the dead were performed, beginning in January 1877. It is also where the Founding Fathers of the United States appeared twice to Wilford Woodruff — an experience depicted in the painting That We May be Redeemed, which has hung in the temple for decades. With 18 sealing rooms, it had more sealing rooms than any other temple in the Church until the recent renovation of the Salt Lake Temple.

The temple closed in November 2019 for a major four-year renovation that reinforced the historic structure, replaced all mechanical systems, restored full endowment room murals, and transformed the surrounding grounds with new plazas, water features, and hundreds of additional trees. President Jeffrey R. Holland — who was born and raised in St. George, was endowed in this temple, and was sealed here — rededicated it on December 10, 2023.
