About the St. Paul Minnesota Temple
Announced on July 29, 1998 and dedicated on January 9, 2000 by President Gordon B. Hinckley, the St. Paul Minnesota Temple is the 69th operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the first built in Minnesota. The 11,411-square-foot temple sits on 7.5 acres at 2150 Hadley Avenue North in Oakdale, clad in light gray granite veneer with a single attached spire. The site carries a meaningful history within the local Church community: Elder Thomas A. Holt — an Area Authority Seventy and St. Paul resident — shared at the groundbreaking that he had once been assigned to find a site for the local stake center, had looked at several locations without feeling anything, and came to this oak-covered hilltop where the Spirit immediately bore witness that it was the right place. That same revelation guided the stake center's construction there — and decades later, the same site was chosen for Minnesota's first temple. "The Lord chose this place," Elder Holt said.
The arrival of a temple in Minnesota was felt deeply by members who had long traveled hours to reach the nearest temple. Elder Holt noted at the groundbreaking that the first Latter-day Saints in Minnesota came in 1847 from Nauvoo — and that for much of the Church's presence in the state, the nearest temple was Salt Lake City, a two-day drive away. The first Minnesota stake was organized in 1960; by the time of the temple dedication, there were six. The temple serves 9 stakes throughout Minnesota and northern Wisconsin.
