Nestled in the mountain-ringed town of Afton, the Star Valley Temple was Wyoming’s first temple, fulfilling a long-held hope in a valley first settled by Mormon pioneers and home to the state’s first stake, organized in 1892. Announced by President Thomas S. Monson on October 1, 2011 — who quipped to the delighted General Conference audience, “I think I’ll dedicate that one” — it was dedicated on October 30, 2016 by Elder David A. Bednar as the Church’s 154th operating temple. Its classical design echoes the historic Star Valley Tabernacle just a mile north. About the Star Valley Wyoming Temple
Wyoming holds a significant place in Church history as the route countless Latter-day Saint pioneers crossed on their westward migration to Utah throughout the 1840s, 50s, and 60s, yet the state went generations without a temple of its own. Star Valley, settled by Latter-day Saint pioneers and home to Wyoming's first stake, organized on August 13, 1892, became the fitting site for change when President Thomas S. Monson announced plans for the Star Valley Wyoming Temple during the October 2011 General Conference. The announcement drew an audible reaction from the Conference Center audience, prompting President Monson to remark with a smile, "I think I'll dedicate that one." Elder Craig C. Christensen presided over the groundbreaking ceremony on April 25, 2015.
The temple's classical design deliberately echoes architectural elements found in the nearby historic Star Valley Tabernacle, located just a mile north, tying the new house of the Lord to the valley's pioneer heritage. Inside, a stunning stained-glass depiction of Jesus Christ graces the foyer — a refurbished piece originally created for a Presbyterian church in New York City. A public open house ran from September 23 through October 8, 2016, and the evening before the dedication, thousands of young men and women performed a cultural celebration at Star Valley High School honoring the history of the Church in Wyoming. Elder David A. Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles dedicated the temple on October 30, 2016, accompanied by his wife, Susan, who was raised in Star Valley — a detail he noted warmly while placing mortar around the cornerstone.
