Vancouver British Columbia Temple Pictures

Set on an elevated site near the Trans-Canada Highway in Langley, just east of Metro Vancouver, the Vancouver British Columbia Temple was the first temple built in the province and the seventh in Canada. Announced by President Gordon B. Hinckley on May 25, 2006, it was dedicated by President Thomas S. Monson on May 2, 2010, ending decades of British Columbian members crossing the border to attend the Seattle Washington Temple. Its exterior of Branco Siena granite from Brazil and gold-leafed angel Moroni rise above beautifully landscaped grounds that include a wooded, park-like retreat. Our collection of Vancouver British Columbia Temple pictures, art prints, and paintings captures this Pacific Northwest landmark.

About the Vancouver British Columbia Temple

The Church's roots in Langley trace back to a small branch organized in the 1950s, when about 20 area members gathered for Sunday services in the living room of the Mitchell family, who built benches from scrap lumber and rearranged their furniture each week to make room for worship. The congregation grew steadily, and on November 21, 1960, the first stake in British Columbia — the Vancouver Stake — was created with wards spanning Vancouver, Chilliwack, Langley, and beyond. Decades later, President Gordon B. Hinckley announced plans for a temple in the Vancouver area on May 25, 2006, finally sparing British Columbian members the trip across the border to the Seattle Washington Temple. A public hearing was held in 2007 to address community questions about traffic, spire height, and lighting before Elder Ronald A. Rasband presided over the groundbreaking on August 4, 2007.

On March 10, 2009, a crowd of about 200 onlookers watched as the temple's steeple was installed, followed by the placement of its gold-leafed angel Moroni statue. The finished 28,165-square-foot temple, clad in Branco Siena granite imported from Brazil, sits on an 11.6-acre site shared with a meetinghouse and the temple president's residence, with a grassy, wooded retreat preserved at the property's south end. A public open house ran April 9 through 24, 2010, followed by a Youth Cultural Celebration of music and dance at the Langley Event Centre. President Thomas S. Monson dedicated the Vancouver British Columbia Temple on May 2, 2010 — the province's first temple and the 131st operating temple of the Church — serving members from eight stakes and one district across British Columbia and northwest Washington.
