About the Washington D.C. Temple
Announced in November 1968 and dedicated November 19–22, 1974 by President Spencer W. Kimball, the Washington D.C. Temple was the first temple built in the Eastern United States and the 16th operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The 156,558-square-foot temple (one of the largest in the world) stands on 52 wooded acres and is sheathed in 173,000 square feet of white Alabama marble — in some areas shaved to just 5/8 of an inch thick, allowing sunlight to filter softly into the interior. Its six-spire design was directly inspired by the Salt Lake Temple, making it the first temple to feature six spires since the Salt Lake Temple's dedication in 1893.
After more than four decades of continuous use, the temple closed in March 2018 for an extensive renovation and was rededicated on August 14, 2022 by President Russell M. Nelson. More than 340,000 guests — including members of Congress and Justices of the United States Supreme Court — toured the temple during the open house that preceded the rededication. At Christmastime, the grounds host the beloved Festival of Lights, featuring nightly concerts and a live nativity scene that draws visitors from across the region.
